Getting Kids Hooked on Reading!
We believe that when a child holds a book in their hands, they also hold the promise of a better future. The United Way Reading Oasis initiative has brought that promise to Anchorage kids.
Each Reading Oasis contains hundreds of new books and comfy furniture, forming a safe and inviting space within a school where children can read, learn and grow. Our goal: make reading for pleasure a habit, at home and at school!
Thanks to you, our first Reading Oasis at Lake Otis Elementary opened in the spring of 2016!
And thanks to a generous gift from the Greg and Patsy Romack Education Fund in 2017, Reading Oases have opened at College Gate and Susitna Elementary. Additional Reading Oases will be opening at Mountain View, Fairview, Willow Crest and Airports Heights Elementary schools this fall. Greg and his family have chosen to honor Patsy, who died in 2015, with an investment in young students, encouraging a love of reading. Patsy was a dedicated, talented and imaginative teacher. This gift is a tribute to her love of education.
Success Starts Early
Getting books to kids as early as possible helps prepare them for success. They can explore their interests, discover their passions and ignite their futures While dramatically decreasing the likelihood that they will drop out of high school.
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), only 30% of Alaskan fourth graders were reading at grade level or above in 2015. There is a measurable connection between reading at grade level and graduating from high school. Studies show that 25% of children who are not reading proficiently by this age do not graduate high school. Of students who are proficient in reading, only 4% do not graduate.
The more kids read, the better their chances at success – in school and beyond. Reading Oasis is one way you can support the kids who need it the most find their love of reading.
