A single father of two and a roofer by trade, Travis faced weeks of recovery following back surgery. Due to his inability to work, it wasn’t long before he got behind on his bills.
Each year hundreds of hardworking families face unexpected hardships that threaten their ability to stay housed, warm and fed. Financial support in the form of rent and utility assistance can mean the difference between a family staying housed or becoming homeless.
Just when the idea of facing winter without heat looked like it might become a reality, Travis learned about Alaska 2-1-1, United Way’s health and human services information and referral line. With a single call he got connected to the help he needed to pay his power bill and keep the heat on in his home.
Travis knows the road to full recovery will take time, but there is still hope in his voice. “I was so thankful,” said Travis. “There was actually someone out there that could help in this extreme time of need.”
